Braden and I set out today to see what kinds of patterns we could find. The sun was out, the skies were blue, and our sweatshirts were left at home. Here’s my view of some of what we experienced.
And here’s one from Braden’s day.
It’s so much fun going out with my son on these adventures!
I had the opportunity to make some images of a friends kids today. They were full of energy! Kaylee and Sean were a bit camera shy, but Ashlynn was very enthusiastic. Here are a couple of samples from the shoot:
Those of you that know me (or have been following the blog) know that I enjoy making images in the dark of night. With this week’s theme being “Moon and Stars”, I thought I would try something a little different. After such a great day yesterday which included seeing images of the snow covered mountains [...]
I’m just a few houses down from the locally famous Pilot Butte Drive In. They have been known as the best burgers in Bend for several years running.
They also make a pretty good milkshake. My 13 yr old son has apparently figured that out.
Yep, that’s an image of the trash can in my kitchen… [...]
I had the wonderful opportunity to spend some time today with some exceptional photographers in a Portland studio learning about things like studio lighting and off camera flash. The folks I met up with were virtual friends, until today. It was nice to meet Hal, Heather, and (finally) Katie face-to-face.
I didn’t make many images, as [...]
Contrast. My favorite definition is “a striking exhibition of unlikeness”. There are so many ways to interpret this idea.
Unfortunately, the most striking exhibition this week was the fact that my camera and I didn’t have enough time to dedicate to making an image of unlikeness.
I decided to post this image of contrast, in its [...]
Wednesday night I had the opportunity to catch up with some friends while shooting the annual Fly Fishing Film Tour event as it passed through Bend. The Tower Theatre was once again this year’s venue. (It’s such a cool place!).
It’s always fun to visit with Jay and Thad. It was nice to meet Rowdy this [...]
Red. What better theme for a week that included Valentines Day.
I happened along some bright red tulips at the grocery store the other day and quickly decided to make them my subject for this weeks theme. . I headed out to pick up a fresh bundle of the flowers on Sunday morning. It seemed [...]
While in Albany today shooting some product shots, I noticed this cool old truck parked out back near the railroad tracks. I made a couple of quick images between rain storms. Thought I would share this one.
I had the chance to shoot a Death Metal band last night. Now, as I have said before, this isn’t really my type of music. I tend to listen to music that encompasses talented musicians (not that Death Metal guys aren’t, I just don’t listen to them very often).
I have to say that the Inimica [...]
The theme of this weeks Project 52 assignment was “Rocks”. I thought a bit about how to interpret this and then ran it by my son. We talked a bit and then decided that we would go make some images of how rocks have been used to build many of our most popular buildings.
Here’s one [...]
Bend’s local newspaper, The Bulletin, ran an image I made of a metal band out of Redmond called Inimica. It ran in Friday’s edition of the Go Magazine weekend entertainment insert.
It’s pretty cool that these guys got some exposure. If you’re looking for something to do Saturday night, stop by Players in Bend and check [...]
I had the wonderful opportunity to attend (and photograph) a fundraising event for cancer research last night. This was my first chance to meet Denise Curtis, or any other cancer survivor, on a personal level. I feel lucky that I met Denise, irregardless. She is so infectiously positive.
I’ve got to say that the event was [...]
“Mountains”.
I live in an area that offers me a wonderful year-round view of 7 snow-capped peaks on almost a daily basis. Unfortunately this past week was cloudy and stormy and my nearby friends only had the chance to show themselves on Saturday. And I had to work…
Making an image of the local mountains [...]
This week’s theme is youth. I had numerous ideas as to how to interpret this idea. Luckily, I had a few visitors to help me out.
I’ll be out of town tomorrow, so I thought I should post this tonight.
Next weeks theme is “Mountain”
(I shouldn’t have posted this until Sunday, but I just couldn’t resist)
First, I made a list of themes for my year long photo project. Then, I randomized them. My day job is in the car biz, and wouldn’t you know it – “cars” came up as my first theme.
I made plans. I scouted the location. [...]
Some of you may have heard about a thing that photographers do every year. It’s known as Project 365. This is when a photographer feels the need to make an image every day, and then post it online. I think that sounds more like work than fun, so I have decided to try and complete [...]
After this Falls move, and then the early winter freeze, I was surprised to see that a long lost friend was still around. Now, if you have been paying attention around here you probably know that I don’t have a green thumb so I’m not sure if this is normal. My potted Hyacinth has decided [...]
A closeup look at my car window from this morning
Last year at about this time, my buddy Dave and I were having a conversation about life and how it was treating both of us. During this talk, the always thinking photographer Dave spoke of trying to make an image that would depict just how cold [...]
My good friend Joe has always been very supportive of my photography. This evening it was his turn to be the subject that I shot.
It was dark outside, and I’m not very experienced (or equipped) for making this type of image. With a little experimentation, and a willing model, we ended up getting some [...]
Doesn’t mean there is no light.
Here is some proof from tonight. I made this image well after the sun went down. The darkness of the evening gave way to the light of the moon.
Making an image isn’t the only way to interpret this.
Think about it.
I would love to hear some of your thoughts [...]
I’m currently working on a project that has lead me deep into my image archives. It’s been a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. I hope the final project comes to fruition!
I thought I would share this image of Davis Lake from a few years ago. We were just on the edge [...]
I had big plans for today. Joe and I were planning a fishing trip to the Metolius, and James was planning on coming over from the valley to join us. Sunday would be spent cheering on our favorite English soccer teams in a classic rivalry.
Well, plans change.
I managed to stop by Volcano Vineyards during [...]
Every October, a bunch of eclectic and free-spirited friends take a weekend to get together and share some time along the banks of the beautiful Yakima River in Eastern Washington. I am happy to say that I was able to take part in the event for my 5th time. It’s something that I always look [...]
I’m getting all my stuff together in order to partake in the 7th annual burning of the pram.
These look good to me…
If you aren’t familiar with the event; think flyfishing, food, friends, and fire.
Definitely the greatest night in flyfishing..
Just a week or so ago there was snow on the ground. Then we got rain, freezing rain, and ice.
This weekend proved to be classic fall in the high desert. I bit of chill in the air, and blue skies above. It was a great to be outside.
Saturday, Braden and I decided to go [...]
I had pretty much given up on getting any fresh peppers from my jalapeno plant this year. Heck, due to my lack of a green thumb, I’m surprised it’s still alive. While doing some chores tonight I noticed that its actually starting to produce!
Will wonders never cease?
I took my buddy Joe to one of my favorite rivers today. He needed to get out, as did I. We explored a little, and then stopped by a spot that I knew would be fishy, but don’t visit very often.
Standing along this river and just looking, listening, smelling, is truly a cleansing experience. The [...]
As winter closes in and a lot of us in the colder areas start to hibernate, I was thinking about some things that I could do to help keep my creative side awake during those long and dark nights.
I offer up a challenge, if you care to participate.
Make a self portrait, without pointing a camera [...]
Oh… It’s the heaters coming back to life after their summer vacation. It’s getting cooler and cooler here in the high desert lately. My recent move from a newer apartment into an older home has given me more respect for a good heating-a/c system.
The recent move has also left me with new and rather drab [...]
I’m a bit new to the senior photo scene. Todays shoot went great. Joe had scoped out locations for me, and Jamie was a willing model.
Here’s a couple of shots from the day…
I’ve posted more of them here, if you are interested.

“Orvis National Casting Competition set for this weekend in Bend.”
Being an avid fly fisherman, when I saw this headline in the Bend Bulletin yesterday, I was a little, well…
Curious.
I am all for a bit of spur of the moment competition among friends when it comes to fly fishing. Heck, it seems like I spot half [...]
Ok, I admit it. I don’t know how to take care of my garden. I have lived in a place that hasn’t required any garden maintenance for the last 7-8 years. Now I live in a neighborhood that is full of green grass, numerous flowers, and wonderful gardens.
My house is the odd place on the [...]
My 45th birthday was on Sunday. My friends and I joke that “45 is the new 29”, but it really does feel that way. I still feel like I am in my 20’s.
My son and I spent the weekend visiting Crater Lake with my parents in their RV. We hit all of the tourist [...]
The story is hard to tell, so I’ll just leave you with a couple of images from the day. I’ll try and put together something later, but right now I’ve got a yard to mow.
An Alfred Hitchcock movie. The Birds, to be more specific (except without the attacking thing).
Here’s the deal… I recently moved into a rental house in a cool neighborhood. Being a rental house, there’s the typical lack of attention to the yard and flowerbeds. Well, at least by the renters. It seems that all of the [...]
Moving. It generally sucks, but I’ve got to say “Wow”. What an experience.
I’ve recently moved out of my apartment and into a house in a really cool neighborhood. What makes it really cool is that my neighbors actually made a point to stop by and introduce themselves. Roger even commented on my West Yellowstone Fly [...]
I spent most of the last week moving. Yuck. The new house is much bigger than where I have spent the last few years. It needs some serious garden work and while busily moving box after box I continually noticed the lack of any flowers. I’m looking forward to getting my hands dirty around here [...]
My 13yr old son Braden has been spending some time behind the camera lately and we thought it would be cool to set up a web gallery to share his images with others.
Check it out here: BB Photo
(As his dad, this makes me all giddy inside!)
To try and beat the heat that has taken over the Pacific Northwest lately, Heather and I decided to head up to the high country. We were up at 3:30 in order to catch first light on Broken Top. Not only was it a lot cooler, but the wildflower display was incredible! Here are some [...]
After a somewhat busy weekend, I decided to take a few minutes to slow down and look around. This is one of the things that I saw…
What did you see this weekend?
My son and I spent some time at the Metolius River’s Wizard Falls fish hatchery on Sunday afternoon. The river offered a cool break from the otherwise warm temperatures that we have been experiencing.
While we were enjoying tossing nuggets to the big fish in the hatchery pond, we discovered this small bird escorting her young [...]
What is normally a school play yard was converted once again today into a haven for fly fishers that enjoy the art of a finely made bamboo fly fishing rod. I was privileged to attend, and be asked to make some images of the event.
I was very excited to see a large amount of kids [...]
There are a lot of changes going on in my life as of late. The biggest changes have to do with me going back to school (sort of), and moving out of my comfortable solo space of almost ten years and into a shared environment.
Transforming.
But, how far should I go? Should I dye the gray [...]
An image of mine made the front page of the Bend Bulletin today.
Another was the main image on the front of the Sports section.
I know it’s not a huge deal, but it’s still kinda cool to me. It’s interesting how some things come just from getting to know good people…
Independence.
Sometimes I feel like I am a little too independent.
Here’s an image from my back door this evening…
And a Fly By from this afternoon…
Thanks to all that have served our country.
Most of us don’t really understand how really good Americans have it.
I have recently joined the social networking group Facebook, and have had a good time sharing information with friends that I normally don’t get much chance to converse with. In the early stages of exploring this new avenue, I added a few “friends” mostly due to the fact that they were friends of some of [...]
My plans took an unexpected turn this evening, so I decided to catch up on some prior obligations.
I looked at my “to-do” list, and chose to make an image that will surely intimidate my competition at this October’s Rochambeau event at Burning Pram. After all, I am the one and only BP Rochambeau champion, two [...]
A while back, Melissa, a very welcome visitor to my blog asked me why. Why I enjoy fishing. It wasn’t the most specific question, so I thought I would first clarify.
I fly fish using many methods, but always practice catch and release. I know this may seem odd to many people. It may also seem [...]
The catching was, well, not so good.
When we made the final turn towards our destination we saw a wall of darkness. Ominous black clouds filled the horizon. Rain soon fell from the sky. Muddy roads led the way.
We made the rendezvous as planned, and set up camp between downpours. Past plans were thrown out the [...]
Backpack – Check!
Tent – Check!
Sleeping bag – Check!
Stove – Check!
Food – Check!
Fly rods– Check!
Camera – Check!
Rain Gear – hmmmm.
I don’t normally need rain gear here in Central Oregon, especially in mid-June.
I’m heading out tomorrow for a few days of backpacking and fly fishing.
Have a great weekend!
After running some errands under this morning’s blue skies, my son and I decided to watch a movie after lunch. We closed the blinds and settled in only to be disrupted by the sounds of thunder outside. Shortly after the first sounds of the storm torrential downpour came. It first started as rain, then quickly [...]
I hit the market today and found that I shopped more for color than for nutrition. The salsa is gonna be a bit warm…
I’m wondering if anyone else does the same. If so, why not take a photo and post an example here for all of us to enjoy. If not, why don’t you give [...]
After missing last night’s thunderstorms due to a social engagement, I made it a point to be ready for this evenings predicted redux. While I was watching the local news reporting lightning strikes a few miles east, I heard the first rumble of thunder. I grabbed the camera gear and quickly headed east. Why is [...]
After a rather busy time at my day job, I came home and settled into my part time passion of photography. I had my nose to the computer screen editing some images when my phone rang. It was my buddy Jason from Yakima. I thought he had just called to see what’s up, but it [...]
A couple of friends and I spent a fabulous day hiking in the high desert. We ventured down into a gorgeous canyon eventually coming to the stream that flowed down its bottom.
The sites were spectacular. Sedimentary lines along the walls, slot canyons, pillars. With all of this majestic display above, I found myself more enamored [...]
The District Finals for the local middle school track and field competition where held today. I am proud to say that Braden finished fourth in his 200-meter event, and he and his team garnered a third place finish in the 4×200-meter relay!
You rock! Congrats!
Every spring, around Mothers Day, there is a special area that comes to life with an abundant display of numerous wildflowers. Every year I make an attempt to view the glorious display. This year I was fortunate enough to be accompanied not only by my son, but a couple of friends as well. The weather [...]
