I'm spending a few days on the Western side of the state and things are surely busting out all over as Spring weather appears to have arrived. So this week, we'll be posting much among the cherry blossoms. In this one, cherry blossoms recede into the far background from a small plaza along the Willamette River. (Click the thumbnail to see how far into the distance they go) Portland, Oregon; March
I can't explain it, but for whatever reason, I really like this photo with the newer lines of the Eye's pods, old-style lamp post, and clouds. (Click on the thumbnail and see what you think) London, UK; September, 2009.
It's starting to feel like Spring in certain places here in the northwest part of the US. Word is blossoms like these are sprouting up all over the western side of the state. Can't wait for warmer temps to arrive here where I live. Clackamas, Oregon; March, 2009.
In another nod toward the current Winter Olympics, not all the activities happen in Vancouver itself. Some are up the coastline where the mountains are much higher, like these. The mountains in the foreground are islands, while the ones in the background are on the BC mainland. (click on the thumbnail for a closer look) Cortes Island, BC, Canada; July, 2006.
The shining sun raises the temperature to cause steam to rise from the McKenzie River on a brilliant early autumn day. Rural Lane County, Oregon; October, 2003.
An ancient tribe of Native peoples who were cliff dwellers called the Sinagua created this 20-room high rise apartment on the side of a cliff. Interestingly enough, Sinagua means waterless, yet this place, called Montezuma's Castle, has Beaver Creek flowing right in front of it, along with areas of crop development. (click on the thumbnail for more detail) Near Casa Grande, Arizona; May, 2006.
We finish our week studying Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris with this night shot. There's really nothing more Gothic than standing next to this building at night when it's fully lit. (click on the thumbnail for more detail). Paris, France; September, 2009.
Since we didn't post a photo yesterday, we're posting 2 of them today. The flying buttresses of Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris are impressive enough by day, but to see them lit at night is even more so. Taken from across the Seine, Paris, France; September, 2009.
When one looks at Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris at night, it's really not hard to see how Hugo wrote his book about the hunchback. Here, the gargoyles (rain spouts) stand out in the bright night lights. One can almost hear Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor just looking at this photo. Paris France; September, 2009.
The other end of Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris, with its famous flying buttresses. (click on the thumbnail to see more detail) Taken from a boat on the Seine River, Paris, France; September, 2009.
This week, we're concentrating on Paris. Where does one start in Paris? Well, we've decided to spend the entire week looking at an incredible architectural marvel: the Cathedral Norte Dame de Paris. This photo was taken from the Petit Pont over the Seine River. Paris, France; September, 2009.
Mind the gap: Leaving the Tube and coming out of the Underground station. (click the thumbnail to see the artwork at the top) London, UK; September, 2009.
It was early in the morning; everything was so still. The sun had just risen above the rooftops, still in an orange color state, throwing long shadows. No sound, not even birds or traffic. I could have been in ancient Greece, on my way to the Acropolis or something. I felt like that was where I was. It was sorta spooky. It was timeless. (Click on thumbnail for more detail) Palace of Fine Arts,
So there I was driving to work last week and I was looking off to the side, noticing the fog. And then I saw this one house on a knoll popping out in the middle of the fog way off in the distance. I pulled over, grabbed the point and shoot, and took this shot. I had to use the extreme telephoto, so it's not the best quality, but it was a cool scene in my opinion. (Click on the thumbnail to see
Coming out of a tower turret at the Tower of London (right), standing on a parapet, and seeing the beginning of Tower Bridge. London, UK; September, 2009.
We're spending this week in London. We'll start along the River Thames at the famous Eye, which has a multitude of small little capsules, each of which hold at least a dozen or more people. I think it takes about a half hour to complete the circle, and I'm told you can get some great pics from the top. I didn't go on it. London, UK; September, 2009.
The sun finds a lone, leafless Japanese maple tree in the middle of winter. I manipulated this one just a tad. (click on the thumbnail for more of a watercolor effect) Japanese Gardens, Portland, Oregon; February, 2007.
Statuary above the door of the Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris depicting Christ on Judgement Day weighing the souls. (Click on the thumbnail to see each representation has a different face and posture. These were not mass-produced, but individually created. Probably a main reason why it took over 170 years to complete the building). Paris, France; September, 2009.
The Chapel of the Holy Cross. People come from all over the world to see this place, and if you're a fan of the Weather Warden book series by Rachel Cain (no pun intended), this building is a place of power in the books. Sedona, Arizona; September, 2005.
Along the McKenzie River. Obviously, I've manipulated this photo a little bit. Looks sorta like a watercolor, doesn't it? Rural Lane County, Oregon; November, 2003.
A cool old Victorian house near the corner of Haight and Ashbury streets. (click on the thumbnail to check out how they even got the colors of the rainspout right). San Francisco, California; January, 2008.
The Morrison Street Bridge across the Willamette River at night. (click on the thumbnail to better see the bridge or the rift in the sky). Portland, Oregon, August, 2009.
A fountain seen through a wrought iron portal. (Click on the thumbnail to see the water falling or the detail on the tile). Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, Sedona, Arizona, September, 2005.
Another in my series of Lines, Light, Textures, and Colors. A doorway and steps on a downtown church. Obviously, this door is an outie. Portland, Oregon; April, 2009.
And so the sun sets on 2009. Sometimes nature is much more phantasmagorical than man. Who coulda come up with these colors? If a person would have done this, it would have seemed unnatural. Go figure. Broken Top, South, Middle and North Sisters (left to right) Near Terrebonne, Oregon; January, 2008.
It's below freezing and there's a ton of snow outside today. So I thought I'd harken back to a warmer time. (Click on the thumbnail to see Vancouver Island in the distance) Cortes Island, BC, Canada; July, 2004.
WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report) - The United States Senate today unveiled details of its health care plan, tentatively called CompromiseCareTM:-- Under CompromiseCareTM, people with no coverage will be allowed to keep their current plan.-- Medicare will be extended to 55-year-olds as soon as they turn 65.-- You will have access to cheap Canadian drugs if you live in
So when I began this site over 5 years ago, I thought it would be an Internet place where I could pontificate, demonstrate, indicate, and medicate people who stopped by. Turns out it became just a photo blog; not that there's anything wrong with that. But every now and again I get the urge to go back to the beginning intent. Then I sleep on it and come back to my senses. But I think what I might do
A nice little window box in all its simplistic glory. (click on the thumbnail to see the ingenious way they hung the frame on the wall) Montmontre section of Paris, France; September, 2009.
This 7-foot high water fountain is at the entrance to Taliesen West, Frank Lloyd Wright's western home, now turned into an architectural college and tourist attraction. (Click on the thumbnail to try to find the hammer embedded in the monolith behind the fountain) Scottsdale, Arizona; September, 2004.
This is a Druid. What? You thought Druids had gone the way of the dodo bird? Yeah, me, too. But apparently not. This guy was available to give you a full Druidic discourse--for a donation, of course. (Click on the thumbnail to get a better view of his full regalia) Oregon Country Fair, Veneta, Oregon; July, 2009.
On the final day of our float, we were out of cash, so I had to bike it from the Canal du Nivernais 4 or 5 kilometers into town to find an ATM so we could pay our ride back to the put in point. I stopped in the middle of the ride to catch my breath and to capture this bucolic scene. Near Corbigny, France; September, 2009.
Into the clouds: Traveling from my Central Oregon home to the Portland area and back takes me up and over the Cascade Mountains range. On this day, there was a break in the clouds and I stopped to snag this one. (you can see the cloud patterns better by clicking on the thumbnail) On the slopes of Mount Hood, Oregon; November, 2009
So there we were. Just got out of the car to attend a folk festival when this wild young buck comes strolling through the parking area. Good thing we were armed (with a camera). Sisters, Oregon; September, 2009.
Let's end the week with a trip down a little side street in Montmartre. Note the pizza parlor on the left. I think the only thing more prevalent in France than pizza parlors are pharmacies. Paris, France; September, 2009.
First snow storm while driving this season. Don't try this at home kids--taking a photo while driving, I mean. (Click on the thumbnail to see the snow flakes comin' atcha) Rural Klamath County, Oregon; November, 2009.
Little Abandoned House in the Meadow After a Snow Storm. I'm thinkin' that won't work as a book title. (click on the thumbnail to actually see the house) Near Chiloquin, Oregon; November, 2009.
One of the most popular drives in Oregon is the one from the Portland area to Government Camp at the base of Mount Hood. Without a doubt the most popular place to pull over on that drive is right here when one gets the first really good, nearly full view of the peak. I took this one just in that amber hour as the sun was getting ready to set, through the fog/clouds. Cascade foothills, rural
Oh, heck. We started the week with a sunset, let's end it with one, too. I was looking out my front window week before last and saw this through the trees. I grabbed my little point and shoot, ran outside and snagged this one. (click on the thumbnail to see how the ants ate the leaves) Madras, Oregon; October, 2009.
Continuing with our theme this week of doors and windows of France, this offering has lace curtains with a fruit pattern. (more detail by clicking on the thumbnail) Auxerre, France; September, 2009.
We had such a good time with a theme week last week that we thought we'd do another one this week: Doors and windows of France. The French love to decorate their stoops and window ledges, and lace curtains with distinctive patterns are also de rigueur. (click on the thumbnail to see the patterns here) Vincelles, France; September, 2009.
As we continue our All Hallow's Eve week here at the Grind we thought we'd--OMG!!!!! Someone put a knife through my granddaughter's brain!!!!!!!!!!! Portland, Oregon; July, 2009.
Finally, let's throw in some creepy-crawlies. (There are more of them in this photo than at first meets the eye. Click on the thumbnail to count. I found 8.). Ashland, Oregon; October, 2006.
It's All Hallow's Eve week here at the Grind. And of course one starts any decent Halloween celebration with cobwebs, right? It looks like these French spiders have the right idea. (click on the thumbnail to count the plethora of webs). Canal du Nivernais, Burgundy region of France; September, 2009.
For 10 minutes at the top of each hour nightly, a plethora of twinkly lights are lit on the Eiffel Tower. Waiting when it's a tad cool can be a trial. Luckily, there was little wind this night, so the reflection was pretty decent. (click on the thumbnail for much more detail) Paris, France; September, 2009.
Dusk along the Yonne River. While I actually took this shot, I posted it to a photo web site a few days ago and someone took it into an HDR program to 'enhance' it and then sent it back to me. This is their final product, which I do like. Vincelles, France; September, 2009.
Since I live in a small, rural town in the US, I was a little surprised to see this outdoor restaurant scene. Of course, major metropolitan communities--especially in Europe--all likely have large populations of people from the Middle East, I hadn't actually come across something like this before. I think it was the hookas that caused the surprise more than anything. My initial thought process
Another participant in the Mayor's Festival parade along the Thames River stands on a float under a representation of Jesus. (Click on the thumbnail to get a better look at those clothes she's almost wearing). London, UK; September, 2009.

It's gothic abbey of St. Germaine stands guard over the ancient city of Auxerre, France. Auxerre was a flourishing Gallo-British centre, Antissiodorum through which passed one of the main roads of the area, the Via Agrippa (1st century AD) which crossed the Yonne River (Gallo-Roman Icauna) here. In the third century it became the seat of a bishop and a provincial capital of the Roman Empire. In
There she is: Cleopatra. Well, at least there are the outer wrappings of her mummy. What's left of her is actually inside all that. British Museum, London, UK; September, 2009.
Just a little farm house: Actually, this is the Chateau de Faulin near Lucy-sur Yonne, along the Canal du Nivernais in the Burgundy region of France; September, 2009.
A stain glass window in St. Margaret's Church, Westminster Abbey. A sign out front states "(t)he building, consecrated in 1523, is the third on the site. Since 1614, St. Margaret's has been the church of the House of Commons. Windows commemorate Caxton and Milton, who worshipped here, and Raleigh, who is buried in front of the alter, under the glorious window made for King Henry VII and Catherine
While walking in London, we came across this young woman creating huge soap bubbles, usually oblong. But there were a few that were more round. I was fortunate enough to capture this one, which was over a foot in diameter. (clicking on the thumbnail will give a better view) London, UK; September, 2009.
A very small section of ceiling in one of the wings of the Louvre. (Click on the thumbnail for MUCH more detail). We think of all the art that is inside the Louvre, but I never personally understood how the inside of the building itself is also a work of art in many places. More on that over the next several weeks. I mean on the one hand, you could understand its anger when the public got a view
Each year, the city of London holds the Mayor's Festival along the Thames River. We arrived in London on the day of the parade and walked among the participants prior to the festival's nighttime parade. This group was more than happy to pose for me...as were others which shall find a place here in the coming weeks. (click the thumbnail for more costume detail) London, UK; September, 2009.
Shot this image last night as I continue on my journey. Images on this page will be spotty at best until I return from my trip in a week or so. (click on thumbnail for more detail) Paris, France; September, 2009.
A night on the midway at the Jefferson County Fair. Madras, Oregon; July, 2009. (NOTE: I will be gone for the next 2 weeks and will post a photo as I can until I return on Sept. 28. There will be photos, just not daily again until the 28th. You can amuse yourselves by grazing the archives in the column at the right until things return to normal).
Snoqualmie Falls from a different angle than I posted a few weeks ago. (Click on the thumbnail for a bigger splash) Snoqualmie, Washington; August, 2009.
I donno. When I look at this photo, for some reason the song "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" starts playing in my head. (click the thumbnail to see the action in the photo, and see better color, too). Madras, Oregon; August, 2009.
So there I was, driving to work one morning a couple of weeks ago, and I came around a curve to find a hot air balloon no more than 40 feet above the highway. I snatched up my handy dandy little point and shoot, steered the car with my knees (don't try that at home, youngsters) and snapped off a series of shots. The balloon appeared to land about 100 yards on the other side of the highway to
Another in my on-going series of lines, light, textures, and patterns. (click the thumbnail to really get sucked in) On the campus of the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington; July, 2009.
This was an interesting dance to watch: the stilted performer would stand absolutely still, appearing to be some sort of paper-mache growth until the little boy would begin to turn his head, at which point the performer would move. The boy would jerk his head back and stand and watch the performer, who would again stand perfectly still. The boy couldn't decide if there was a real person in there
It was hot, over 100 degrees F. But it was cool, we were in a town that all the buildings were made to replicate Bavaria, the Alps: Alp-style paint, construction, restaurants, gift shops, hotels, even a Bavarian-style May Pole in the town square, shown here. If you get a chance to make the trip--it's a little out of the way--it's entirely worth it. (Click on the thumbnail for more detail)
Each year, tons of sand is imported into Pioneer Square for a competition known as Sand in the City, which is used as a fund raiser for children's groups. This dragon is asleep, so don't awaken it. Portland, Oregon; July, 2009.
This is Country artist Chuck Wicks. I'd never heard of him, but he drew a larger than usual crowd to the county fair. I guess he's got a famous wife who stars on something called Dancing With The Stars. Madras, Oregon; July, 2009.
On a log surrounded by water lilies, a Great Blue Heron soaks in the sun on the canal between Lake Union and Union Bay. Seattle, Washington; July, 2009.
So there I was at this year's Oregon Country Fair, standing around waiting for my partner's granddaughter to get something to eat when I casually turned to my right and saw this person in her saffron wings and full regalia. Obviously, she had no compunction against being photographed. (to better see her face, click on the thumbnail) Near Veneta, Oregon; July, 2009.
Snoqualmie Falls, with Salish Lodge to the left. At 270 feet, the falls are 100 feet higher than Niagra Falls. (Click on the thumbnail for more detail) Snoqualmie, Washington, August, 2009.

This month, July, marks the 5-year anniversary of this blog. So for the month of July, I am going back through the archives and choosing some of my favorite photos that I have posted during that time. Also, rather than outlining when the photo was taken, I shall be outlining when it was posted on this blog. Sometimes, it could be that I have chosen a photo because of the composition, while others
Obviously, this guy's got a question on his mind. I don't think it has anything to do with the dress he's wearing, the chiffon scarves on his arms, or the balloon around his waist, but one never knows. Seattle Center, Seattle, Washington; April, 2009.
An insect crawls across the face of one of the alliums currently blooming in my backyard. (Click the thumbnail for much more detail) Madras, Oregon; June, 2009.
I was coming out of an eatery after having breakfast early one morning and saw this interesting entry to a sushi restaurant, with its intricately carved wooden facade and bell, along with the fish embroidered in the curtain. (Click on the thumbnail for more detail) Half Moon Bay, California; May, 2009.
A totem pole watches over visitors to Horseshoe Bay, while a sea gull watches over the pole. This is almost a quintessential Canadian port: small, beautiful, and a dock for BC Ferries, the largest ferry system in the world. (Click the thumbnail for more detail) Near Vancouver, BC; April, 2009.
He couldn't keep on going and going and going....The Energizer Bunny balloon (the largest hot air balloon in North America) deflates while two other balloons keep going during a night glow event. Some of Portland's fountains are made available for public use. After all, they are the public's fountains, right? This was a hot day and many people downtown for other activities decided to take advantage and have fun with this fountain. (Click on the thumbnail to see the little girl completely engulfed or the tiny tot being helped to play with the water) Portland, Oregon; May, 2009.
Sometimes, leaving the shutter open longer can make for an interesting shot. I like this one because it seems the woman on the left is stepping into the shot from another dimension entirely. (Click on the thumbnail to get a better sense) Again taken at the Starlight Parade, Portland, Oregon; May, 2009.
These are not the 'droids you're after...It's Rose Festival time here in Oregon, and that means a plethora of activities, including several parades. One of the most fun parades is the Starlight Parade because it's less formal, much more playful, and it's at night. Tens of thousands line the streets to watch. I attended this year's Starlight Parade last Friday. Here, a Storm Trooper let's us have
